Having Trouble Sleeping

You went to bed like any other night and fell into a deep sleep in minutes. But when you woke up, you weren't at home. You were in a car (that wasn't yours), wearing clothes (that weren't yours), and holding a bag full of money (that wasn't yours). Suddenly, you see a policeman approaching the strange car you are inside. What (or who) caused this scenario?  What were the effects of the scenario?

In the comments section to this blog, post a paragraph (8-10 sentences) response to this prompt.  Blog post is due by midnight tonight - Wednesday, Nov. 12th.

I am sure that you all know the famous story of Aladdin and the Lamp. In this adventure, Aladdin finds a dirty oil lamp in the sand. He rubs the lamp to clean it off and "poof!" - a magical, wish-granting genie appears. Put yourself in Aladdin's shoes: you found the lamp, you awoke the genie, and now you have been granted three wishes.

In this creative writing blog post, I want you to pretend you're Aladdin, and tell me what you'd wish for if a genie could grant you any three (3) wishes.  Take it seriously and think critically and creatively about your wishes. Really, stop for a second, and think about this.  How would these wishes impact your life? Why did you select these three specifics wishes. Also, remember the old adage:  "Be careful what you wish for; it just might come true." In a well-written (correct capitalization, punctuation, and sentence structures) paragraph, tell me about your three wishes and the reasons why you chose them.

This blog post will be due on Sunday, April 20th at midnight.  I will not give credit to any blogs submitted after this deadline.

April 1st is an American holiday - April Fool's Day. Every April 1st, people play pranks on each other, trying to see if they can make other people into fools. The pranks are to be "good-spirited," and are not done to be mean or malicious. In honor of April Fool's Day, I want you to write a well-written paragraph (8-10 sentences), describing a good prank.

In this creative writing blog post, I want you to describe a prank in a good, well-written paragraph.  If  you aren't sure what a prank is, please search for this word in a dictionary.  In the prank, describe the prank in detail, and tell me who is involved in the prank, and who you would "pull the prank on" (or do the prank to).   Maybe, you could do a prank today, and then write a paragraph telling me about what you did and to whom.

This blog post will be due on Sunday, April 6th at midnight.  I will not give credit to any blogs submitted after this deadline.

What Grade Are You Getting In Life?

This week, in honor the compare and contrast essay, we will be doing some self and peer reflection.  But in order to be able to see another person with clear eyes, it's important to have a strong sense of self to compare to.   For this week's blog entry, I want you to take this quick quiz:

http://www.buzzfeed.com/leonoraepstein/what-grade-are-you-getting-in-life

Once you get your "grade,"  think about why you got that grade.  What areas of your life do you think you can improve on?  What changes can you make to get a better "grade in life?"  First, use this blog entry to write a plan of action of changes you can make to improve your grade.

Then, pick one change you can make.  Take the next 3 or 4 days, and make that change in your life.  Get more sleep.  Talk to family and friends more often.  Reorganize your room.  Whatever you choose, make the change and see what happens.  Then, finish your blog entry, by telling me what happened once you made the change.  Did you life improve after you picked up your socks or cleaned that big pile of laundry in the corner?

If you take this test today, and get an A+ and your life is great, tell me why you think you got that A+.  What are your biggest and most successful strategies for living and awesome existence?

This blog entry will be due next Wednesday, March 26 at midnight.

Beware of Humans!

Read this poem, "The Crocodile," by Jack Prelutsky:

Beware the crafty crocodile
who beckons you with clever smile
to join him in the river Nile
and swim with him a little while.

His smile is not a friendly smile,
it springs from his dishonest guile
and treacherous reptilian style.
Beware the crafty crocodile.

Yes, crocodiles can be scary!  But who should be more afraid of whom - people or crocodiles? Are crocodiles more dangerous to people or are people more dangerous to crocodiles? How do people endanger crocodiles?  Which species has killed more captured more of the other?  Research these questions, and apply what you find in your response.

For this creative writing entry, you have two options.  Choose one:

1)  Rewrite the poem from the crocodile's perspective.
2)  Or write a how-to process paragraph on The Crocodile Rules For Dealing With Humans.

Your response is due in the comments section of this blog post after spring break on Tuesday, March 18, 2014.

In this spirit, please write about the topic above, imagining you are a journalist who plagiarizes in your work. Please respond to the prompt above in a "comment" below.
